Documental sobre Norm Macdonald revela sus batallas contra el cáncer y su decisión de mantenerlo en privado

Ciudad de Mexico, 16 de octubre de 2026.- Un documental sobre el comediante Norm Macdonald revela que luchó en silencio contra el cáncer de estómago en la década de 1980, según clips de entrevistas presentados en la película por Harland Williams, uno de sus amigos más antiguos.
De acuerdo con la investigación, en 2013 Macdonald fue diagnosticado con mieloma múltiple y solo se lo contó a su familia, su agente y su exesposa, eligiendo ocultarlo al público e incluso a sus amigos más cercanos. Le recetaron dexametasona, lo que le hizo ganar peso considerablemente.
El documental señala que Macdonald se inspiró para mantener su cáncer en privado por Richard Farnsworth, el actor experimentado que, tras luchar en secreto contra un cáncer terminal, se quitó la vida con un arma en octubre de 2000. Farnsworth fue nominado a un Premio de la Academia por la película 'The Straight Story'.
En una cita incluida en la investigación, Macdonald expresó: "I was always taught that the nature of art was to conceal, not to reveal. What they do now is 'confessional comedy,' but when people confess things and they're told how brave they are, because they have cancer or something and they talk about it, well, everyone has cancer. It's not rare at all. The brave thing to do if you have cancer is to not talk about it".
Macdonald también se refirió a Farnsworth en otra cita: "I remember Richard Farnsworth was an old character actor and he did a David Lynch movie called 'The Straight Story.' It was based on a guy who, in actual real life, drove his riding lawnmower across the state to visit his brother, who was dying. It was Richard Farnsworth's last movie. He was very frail, riddled with cancer. So anyways, the point of it is, Richard Farnsworth was nominated for an Academy Award for the movie, and if he'd said he was filled with cancer, he would've won, for sure. But instead, he didn't say it. In fact, no one knew it; he kept it from everyone. He didn't want to cause people distress, so I thought, 'Wow, how incredible to go through it alone.'"
